It’s Angie’s last day in school. She finished her first grade off fine….. actually, better than just fine. She got her award for perfect attendance for the whole year and her teacher’s award in the first quarter of the school year.
Her teacher, Mrs. Schelerf, really likes Angie for her “openness”. Unlike her beloved shy mom, me, Angie is always willing to express her opinions and feelings to her teacher. To me, she embraced the world with all her heart. She might not be the top student to skip a grade or enrolled into the GATE program, but I think she is great just being herself.
I talked to one of the parents about the curriculum taught in Angie’s school. She complained that the standard in this school is too low or we should say the standard in California is way too low. I agree with her. Angie’s cousin in Taiwan is probably learning much more than her as been a first grader…. But really, what could I do besides moving away from California? She did. She didn’t moved out of California, but she transferred her child from our school district to a district with more Asian students (especially Chinese) so her child can experience higher competition and be prepared for his successful life ahead of him.
Anyhow, I just wish Angie’s second year in elementary school can also have a wonderful teacher like Mrs. Schelerf. May God lead Angie in the same way as he did in the first grade. Or I should wish a peaceful summer first??
